Shakespeare Takes Up Residency in the Adirondack Park this Summer

Every summer in New York City the Public Theatre produces free Shakespeare in Central Park. This summer The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts with various community partners will follow suit and produce its own version of Shakespeare in the Park. Only our park is much larger. We have the entire Adirondack Park.

This summer The Arts Center will produce a 45 minute outdoor production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream to be performed at the parks and beaches of twelve Adirondack towns. The cast will feature a unique mixture of professional actors from New York City and local aspiring actors. The production will be open to the general public, is appropriate for all ages, and is free admission. The goal of this production is to capture the spirit of the Adirondacks. In that vein the design for the production incorporates elements of the culture of the Adirondack Park. The world of the fairies is divided into male and female with Oberon and Puck being romantic representations of the lumberjack tradition and Titania and her fairies representing environment friendly hippies. The young lovers will be summer teens on vacation from the city in their designer clothes and footwear. And the mechanicals will be beatnik actors from the city; dressed in black and armed with their bug spray.

SNOFEST - By mid-March many snowmobilers start putting away their sleds and start thinking about summer. Not in Old Forge, NY! The four major dealers: Ski Doo, Yamaha, Polaris, and Arctic Cat will premier their 2010 models, offering demo rides, weather permitting. Thousands of snowmobile enthusiasts take advantage of this opportunity to be the first to preview next year’s line of sleds and gear. Gates to the North Street Recreation Center will be open on Friday from Noon to 6pm, Saturday from 9am to 9pm, and on Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free. There will be Freestyle Snocross Shows all three days, with a Back-Flip Fireworks Finale on Saturday at 7pm. Signage will indicate designated parking areas and shuttle busses will be running to transport event goers. Snofest 2009 is brought to you by the Central Adirondack Association. In addition to snowmobile season and ski season another sporting season is underway
in Old Forge, bowling season.

On Monday, Jan. 12 the men’s bowling leagues began competing again. The lanes at the North Street Restaurant, which have been closed for three years,are now open. North Street co-owner Jim Connerty says that getting the lanes up and running has been a community project.

“Re-opening the lanes has
been a very labor intensive effort.
We have been working
daily over the past month with
a lot of help from community
members especially George
Meeker and Jordy Cudhea on
the mechanical end and Steve
Parks organizationally,” said
Connerty.

The lanes open at 2 p.m.
on weekdays and at noon on
the weekends. There is open
bowling until 6 p.m. on
Mondays and Thursdays. The
rest of the week there is open
bowling until 10 p.m. On the
weekends, the lanes are open
until 11 p.m

The Lakefront Mountaineer Restaurant at the North Woods Inn in Old Forge is spectacular.

Breakfast and Dinner are the two meals we have had at the hotel over the last several months. Breakfast is great, weekday and weekdnds alike. The buffet is outstanding and the food it excellent, fresh and plentiful. The best part of waking up is the NWI breakfast and great coffee.

Dinner is a pleasure you need to experience. In the evening the dining room is transformed into this cozy feeling oasis where your are the king and queen. The servers pamper you and the food in itself is excellent,but the presentation is beyond anything I have experieced in my worldly travels. The featured selectin of New York State Wines, some that rivial those of Europe, only adds to the pleasure of dining at the hotel. Chef Derrick and his staff are eager to serve you and make evry trip there a wonderful dining experience. For food that melts in your mouth with all the wonderful pleasure of fine dining, don't walk but run to have some great meals at the North Woods.

If you have not been there race on over for your seat. This summer most weekdays we had to wait a bit but with the excellent experience it was more than worth the wait to get in. You will not find many gems like this Inn anywhere, so be sure and rush over and check it out.

They also have a Tavern, where they serve lunch and lighter dinners. We eat there too, and the food is great. Chef Dave is drumming up new winter dishes that are excellent too. Chili and Beef stew in a freshly made bread bowl. Both meals were outstanding too.

When I visit my Adirondack home I mark the North Woods Inn as number one on the list for places to go.

And as if great food were not good enough they have Live entertainment that everyone loves. The big Sexy Shawn Smith, and Mike Notley and Colin Clark's Karaoke is wonderful. Fun is not even the name for a night at the North Woods. You can bring your kids and enjoy a great night of good food and fun entertainment. You must go there.

In honor of the Martin Luther King holiday, area
businesses are celebrating July 4th this weekend with special
festivities that include fireworks, baseball and apple
pie.

On Saturday, there will snow baseball at 3 p.m. at the
Town of Webb school athletic field, open to all ages and
free of charge, and a hot dog eating contest and apple pie
special at 4 p.m. at Walt’s Diner.

There will be fireworks at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at the
lakefront, with fire rings for toasting s’mores.
Stores will offer red, white, and blue specials all weekend
long.

Dec 13 - SNOWMOBILE YOUTH SAFETY COURSE - A Youth Safety Course is required by law for anyone between the ages of 10 and 17 years old to operate a snowmobile in New York State. The Central Adirondack Association will sponsor a Youth Snowmobile Safety Course on Saturday, December 13, 2008 for Snodeo. Pre-registration is required and calls will not be accepted before the specified date. Registration will open on Monday, December 1, 2008 for the December 13th class. How To Snowshoe

Snowshoeing s a great way to begin a new outdoor recreational activity this winter. Our local ski shop will advise which type of snow shoe is right for you. Snowshoes, or “Webs” are simply footwear designed for walking over snow by distributing a person’s weight over a large surface of the snow.

Choosing your Snowshoe

The traditional snowshoe, made of hardwood frames and rawhide lacing, are rarely used these days (other than for decorative purposes. Today there are three basic types of snowshoes, those for aerobic/running (and not meant for back country hiking), recreational (for gentle and moderate walks of 3-5 miles) and a mountaineering model – larger and meant for serious hill-climbing and off-trail work. Those of you with larger frames should chose larger snowshoes, which are best for anyone planning regular treks in deep powder. Traditionally, for every pound of body weight there should be one square inch of snowshoe surface. Remember to consider the weight of any backpacking gear you will be carrying..

Bindings

The traditional wooden snowshoes, still worn by purists, employed an “H” binding consisting of a strap around the heel – which crossed a strap around the toe and instep. Today’s modern “webs” have two styles of bindings: one allows the toe to go below the binding itself, and the other, called a “Free Rotation” binding, which does. The heel is always left free. Racers prefer to style allowing the toe to go below the binding; climbers enjoy the latter style. Most important is the ease with which one can manipulate the bindings and straps. In order to avoid stepping on the straps, the loose ends of the straps are always placed on the outside.

Accessories

Either trekking poles or ski poles are popular with snow shoe enthusiasts. Most types of footwear work with snow shoes, racers tend to employ their running shoes, but most wear hiking boots. Ski boots are not recommended. Gaters (tall leg covers) are often used for deep snow. These cover ones hiking boots and prevent snow from getting into their boots from above. Dress in layers, and carry a backback with high carb food, water, maps, matches, and we suggest, first aid supplies for emergencies. Verizon cell phones work from some area hiking places. Service is very good on the trail up nearby Bald Mountain.

Putting on Snowshoes

Snowshoeing can be done anywhere there is sufficient snow, but best at depths of 8 inches or more. The left is shoe is distinguished from the right by the way the loose ends of the straps point. These loose ends always should point outward in order to stop the showshoe enthusiast from stepping on them.

Walking In Snowshoes
Although often said that if one can walk, one can snowshoe, those new to the sport may find the learning curve quite steep. It is important to remember to lift the shoes slightly and walk in an exaggerated stride, especially with larger or the traditional showshoes. Try to avoid an exhausting “straddle-style” of walking, with legs wider-apart then normal , by overlapping the inner edges of the snowshoes. Turns are best done by making a mall semicircle. If space is tight, use your trekking poles for balance. Lift one foot higher than the snow surface and plant it at a 180 degree angle and parallen to the other shoe, as close to it as possible. Quickly repeat the action with the other foot. Remember, most pratfalls are more humiliating then painful, and snowshoeing is one of the safest of winter activities.

Breaking Trail
Breaking trail takes over 50% more energy! It is recommended that it be done in groups, but should you traverse a new path alone, it is recommended that one employs a method called “stamping”. Pause before placing ones full weight on the foot. This allows the snow to compress between one’s foot, and helps pack down the trail for the next snowshoer. A well-broken trail has 6-8 inches of packed snow and is about 2 foot wide. When people walk the trail WITHOUT snowshoes, “postholing” occurs, where boots foll through the packed surface. This can ruin the path for future snowshoers and is best avoided

Climbing In Snowshoes
Many hikers prefer climbing in the winter in snowshoes, as the cleats and tracking on snowshoes make it easier to climb uphill! On steep slopes, employ a “kick-step”. Kick the toe of your shoe into the snow, making a kind of snow “stair”… or walk in a slight herringbone pattern, spreading the shoes outward at an angle. Sidestepping can also be employed.

The Dissent
Nothing beats the joy of using what is often called a “glissade” when returning downhill. It’s a great way to rest one’s leg muscles and speed up your return to the Inn for a hot toddy of mulled cider or hot chocolate! Simple slide downhill on your buttocks! Use a couple of methods to control your speed. Keep one’s arms and poles close to the body, and use your snowshoes and body language to direct your desent. One can also “step slide” using an exaggerated step with a slight slide.

Staying in the Adirondacks is like entering a time warp... nature abounds (just this morning, I passed three eight point bucks on the way into town for a donut!) Fall is mating season for moose, so moose sightings are on the rise, too! Here at the North Woods Inn, we honor our past and celebrate our present by encouraging our guests to visit the nearby Adirondack Museum while here. On Saturday, September 27th the museum will celebrate "National Hunting and Fishing Day" with anextravaganza of programs, demonstrations, and music for outdoor enthusiasts. Offerings include "Casting a Line" with licensed guide and fisherman Patrick Sisti. There will be fly-tying and lure-making demonstrations, a living history camp, and an author's corner featuring Dan Ladd, author of a book about deer hunting in the Adirondacks. The Department of Environmental Conservation booth will provide information about hunting and fishing the ADKs. The photo above is from the museum's collection: those pictured worked out of the Blue Mountain House in the 1880's, when guiding was one of the more lucrative professions here in the Adirondack Mountains. The Town of Webb is fortunate to have a very active historical association. The Goodsell Museum in Old Forge provides walking tours, victorian tea parties (why, even today - just such an event is occurring on the porch of the historic Covewood Lodge overlooking Big Moose Lake. See their website for details!

We are especially fond of the Bald Mountain Christmas ornaments for sale at their museum. They can also be ordered online in time for the holiday season. Nearby Bald Mountain can be hiked anytime - and affords incredible fall foliage views. It is an easy climb, suitable for families as well as experienced climbers. More about the history of Bald Mountain is also available online at the society's website.
